JENNIFER R. JACOBS received her undergraduate degree in Government and Religion from Claremont McKenna College in Claremont, California in 1987. She graduated cum laude with Honors in both Government and Religion, and was the recipient of the Government Department's Honors Award for Outstanding Senior Thesis and the Religion Department's Honors Award for Outstanding Student in Religion. She also served as an Associate Editor of the Claremont Journal of Philosophy.

Ms. Jacobs obtained her Juris Doctor Degree from Loyola Law School and was admitted to the State Bar of California in 1991. In 1992, she was admitted to the U.S. District Court, Central District of California. She has been with Ivie, McNeill & Wyatt since 1992 in the capacities of associate, partner and special counsel.

Ms. Jacobs has been defending medical malpractice and general liability claims against hospitals operated by the County of Los Angeles since 1994. She has also defended the County of Los Angeles in cases involving police chases, police misconduct, false arrest and imprisonment and premises liability. She is experienced with government claims issues and has been very successful in obtaining summary judgments for public entities.

In addition, she has extensive experience defending complex tort actions and handling related insurance coverage and indemnity issues on behalf of private entities, such as Bank of America, The Hertz Corporation, Atlantic Richfield Company and Anchor General Insurance Agency, Inc. She has defended dozens of wrongful death actions.

Ms. Jacobs also has significant experience defending financial institutions in cases involving various aspects of banking operations. Her experience includes defending a federal antitrust action involving foreign money transmitters, defending numerous actions involving allegations of unfair trade practices brought under California's Business & Professions Code 17200, as well as defending lawsuits against banks that involve unique fact patterns of check fraud, counterfeiting and embezzlement.

Ms. Jacobs is a member of the Los Angeles County Bar Association and the American Bar Association. She has served as a Temporary Judge for the Los Angeles Judicial District.

Representative Matters

Medical Malpractice Defense : Defended public hospitals operated by the County of Los Angeles (and their physicians, residents, nurses and other medical licensees) in medical malpractice actions from 1994 to the present. These lawsuits involve many different types of medical specialties and fact patterns. To date, none of these cases has resulted in a verdict for the plaintiff.

State Appellate Practice : Representing small business owner in appeal involving issue of whether punitive damages are recoverable in an action under the Uniform Fraudulent Transfer Act (California Civil Code Sections 3439, et seq.), an issue of first impression in California.

Antitrust : Successfully defended leading national financial institution in a federal antitrust action involving foreign money transmitters.

Banking : Defended leading national financial institution in lawsuits involving unique patterns of check fraud, embezzlement and counterfeiting.

Unfair Trade Practices : Defended insurance companies, banks and small business in actions involving allegations of unfair trade practices in violation of California Business & Professions Code 17200, et seq.
